President Trump’s Department of War is leasing tens of thousands of acres of our Crown and Government trust lands to conduct an illegal war in Iran, waged without a declaration of war by Congress and in flagrant violation of international law.
The law governing our public trust lands is clear: they should be used for education, housing, agriculture, the betterment of Native Hawaiians, and public use. Our lands should not be used to conduct illegal activity and illegal wars.
The President’s Department of War is breaking Hawaiian law. We should revoke his lease.
The Board of Land and Natural Resources is responsible for these leases, and has a legal, fiduciary duty to protect trust lands. A trustee who allows trust property to be used for illegal purposes has breached its duty. The Board cannot simply look the other way.
We, the undersigned, demand that the Board of Land and Natural Resources:
Terminate all military leases and revocable permits on public trust lands where the lands are being used in support of unlawful military operations.
Place this matter on the Board’s agenda for formal public action.
The people of Hawaiʻi conscientiously object to the use of our lands for illegal wars. The Board has a duty to act. We demand action now.
